Poreč is the largest Istrian city by the number of citizens (around 20 000). 58 villages belong to the city area. The city itself, almost two thousand years old, is located in a harbour which is protected from the open sea by an islet named St. Nicholas. Mild climate has no summer swelters because of three very famous winds, bura, jugo and maestral. Very important part of Poreč economy consists of organic food, olive oil and wine (Malvazija, Pinot and Merlot sorts) production. Poreč is one of the most important touristic centers in Croatia. Main streets, Decumanus and Cardo Maximus are preserved in their original form since the Roman empire. Euphrasian Basilica's complex (5th century) is the most important cultural monument in Poreč, and it has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997. It was expanded to its' present form in the 6th century under Byzantine and bishop Euphrasies influence.
